HIDDEN PAIRS 2010 - Sunday September 21st
(Boat Only)
And here’s a report on last year’s competition …
Hidden Pairs Competition 2009.
Let me remind you about the history of this event. Three years ago Bob was experiencing a poor second half of the season. There was a big space in the competitions calendar in September, so BRFFA stepped in and organised an impromptu event. We made all of the prizes vouchers to be spent at Woodford Lodge, and thus gave Bob a win-win situation. That first year we had about twenty anglers join in and the fishing was…poor!!!! Many failed to get a pull, and it was bags of two or three fish that claimed the main prizes.
We quickly forget about poor fishing days (or even poor seasons), and this season many anglers would have us believe that we have just had the worst ever! This year’s Hidden pairs attracted a great entry - 36 anglers turned up to fish. Unfortunately the fishing was not so good following an evil windy and wet day on the Saturday before our event. 15 blanks were recorded.
But for the second competition in a row, Andre Gysler left the rest in his wake! Andre fished with “hot” Ron - our world famous flying ace - Ron Tutt. Obviously, Ron guided Andre very well, and decided to leave it at that, for he didn’t bring all that many fish to the scales. Andre weighed in 12lbs 9 ounces.
Andre’s partner on the day also failed to trouble the weighing scales! John Wellman - club chairman extraordinaire - caught his usual nothing and went home with a brand new Sonik rod and reel as a bonus! It is great when someone goes off with a major prize having blanked. They obviously don’t “try” to blank, and in many cases the angler who catches no fish may work harder than the winner of an event. But, it happens in our competitions regularly - and long may it continue to do so!
Dave Drake was drawn with Keefer and as both had respectable catches they were a comfortable second, only 8 ounces off glory! Third were Paul Roach and Peter Ford, but the 7lb 13oz at the scales were all to Pete’s rod. Fourth were Tony George and Mark Hazard (at least both of this pair caught fish) wiht 6lb 7oz, whilst 5th were John Bowen and Martin Cottis with 6lb 4oz. 6th John Wingrove and Terry Pratt (5lb 15oz), 7th Will Lear and Graham Currie (5lb 4oz) and the final prizes went to Pete Kempton and Jim Smart (4lb 12oz).
A fabulous Mark Withyman buffet followed, with the presentations and a raffle to end an enjoyable day.
